School District 51 has partnered with the Grand Junction Regional Communications Center on the new Emergency and Community Alerts program. Parents can sign up to receive alerts on school incidents or closures as well as a wide variety of other community news like road closures and fire locations. And, it's free and easy! There may be an occasion to dismiss school early because of an emergency condition. When this occurs we will probably have no more that an hour and half to notify parents. We will attempt to contact parents, providing that the information provided us on the child's registration form and student data verification sheet is up to date. It may no be possible to contact every parent, and there may be children returning home without their parents being aware of it. Even with our phone tree in operation and the local radio and television stations announcing our dismissal, there may still be parents who cannot be contacted. It would be a good idea to review emergency procedures with your child. You may want to identify a neighbor of family member to whom your child could report, or with whom they might stay. Your child could know where the key to the house is and how to use it. They need to know how to use the telephone and whom to call.

Keep your address, home phone number, emergency phone number and place of employment current with the school. It is very important that the school have an accurate contact number. A reliable alternate phone number is needed in case the school cannot reach the parent at home or work. Inform the office immediately if you change your address or phone number. The importance of the emergency information cannot be overly emphasized. Please make sure the school has an emergency number on your child's registration form. If a child is injured to any serious extent or requires care beyond the facilities of the school, the parent or guardian on the registration form will be notified to take the child home or for medical treatment.
